The 9th Annual Scientific Conference of the NAO held in Abuja from October 6-8, 2015 was a huge success.

OCTOBER 5, 2015:

The conference commenced with an Orthodontic Awareness road walk, titled “Bright Smiles, Bright future” on Monday, October 5, 2015. This was the first time this activity was being embarked on by the Association and it was very successful. The road walk took off from the National Hospital, Abuja and ended at the Federal Secretariat complex in Abuja. During the walk, Orthodontic awareness leaflets where distributed to members of the public.

After the road walk, members of the Association proceeded to the Command Day Secondary School, Lungi Barracks Abuja, were the students were given an Oral Health talk and also received free dental and orthodontic assessments from members of the Association.

OCTOBER 6, 2015:

The pre-conference workshop was facilitated by Dr Bader Bogan, an Orthodontist from Lebanon and a world renowned expert in the Damon system. The workshop was organized by the NAO in conjunction with Orthodontic Dental Enterprises, Ormco Representatives in Nigeria.

Dr Bogan’s lecture was very educative and highly illustrative as all aspects of his lecture were supported by many pictures from clinical cases he had treated personally. At the end of the lecture there was a short hands-on session for participants.

After the Pre-conference workshop, a welcome cocktail was held within the premises of the National Hospital, with the Chief Medical Director of the Hospital, Dr J.A.F Momoh in attendance. At the cocktail, all the delegates from different parts of the country and also the international delegates, were welcomed to Abuja for the conference.

OCTOBER 7, 2015:

The opening ceremony for the conference was held around midday, on Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at the Conference Hall of the National Hospital, Abuja. Prior to the opening ceremony, there was a scientific session at which abstract presentations of different research works by members were made. The conference was formally declared open by Dr (Mrs) Oniyangi , the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee of the Hospital, who represented the CMD, as Chairperson of the opening Ceremony.

Dr Patrick Williams, a UK Based Orthodontist, was the keynote speaker for the conference and he delivered the keynote lecture for the conference, titled ‘Smile Aesthetics and Psychosocial Wellbeing ‘ . It was an excellently delivered lecture which was well appreciated by the entire audience.

OCTOBER 7, 2015
Conference Dinner

The Conference dinner was held at the Ibeto Hotel in Abuja. The dinner venue was very lovely and members had a very nice time. During the dinner, there was comedy, cultural displays and members also had an opportunity to show their dancing skills! Indeed, it was a night of fun and excitement for all who attended.

OCTOBER 8, 2015

The conference ended on the 8th of October, with a second scientific session in the morning and the Anne Isiekwe memorial prize for residents in the afternoon. The conference came to a formal close at about 1pm on that day.


In all, the Abuja Conference was a huge success and members had a great time. Everyone is looking forward to the next Conference which is scheduled to take place in Lagos, later this year. Incidentally, this is going to be the 10th Annual Scientific conference of the Association thus it promises to be a very exciting conference.
